Celebrating Black History in the United Kingdom

Sankofa is the Adinkra symbol that reminds us to Return and Get what has been left behind.

The Adinkra symbol Sankofa is a powerful statement to many across the African Diaspora.  For many of us it represents  our strong desire to reach back…way back to our ancestral home and learn about the culture our forefathers and mothers had to leave behind.  We have much of that culture within us and we don’t even know it!

As a salute to this powerful symbol that stands as  a strong reminder of our journey to African knowledge I would like to share this photo of the artwork by Goddess Angelika   I am so happy to see my enlightened Brothers and Sisters sharing the knowledge of the beautiful Adinkra symbols. This trend of sharing is the key for us all to join the powerful Sankofa journey.

The African American Literature Book Club has issued  several  recommendations for great reading for Black History Month!  Featured in Episode 7 of  the Book Look is Manning Marable’sMalcolm X: A Life of Reinvention” which examines the life of  Freedom Fighter Malcom X  from a different perspective than we have seen in previous biographies.   Check out the Book Look Episode 7 below and then drop over to the AALBC for more great recommendations for wonderful reading!!

I recently connected with the creaters of a fantastic cartoon series called Bino and Fino on my  Twitter timeline!   Bino and Fino is the name of an adorable  African children’s cartoon now available   that  offers up enriching African culture to our children.  This engaging cartoon is  designed to be an entertaining  teaching tool for kids across the Diapora which addresses topics like African history,  African culture,  African maps,  black history in Diaspora, Life skills, African songs,  African languages, and much more!

Sankofa "Return and Get it"

Through engaging stories the cartoon offers the children a fantastic vehicle for Sankofa –  they can connect with the African continent on a familiar media format.  I love this!!  My children were immediately engaged when they watched the video below and it led to a fantastic discussion about colonialism, independance, history, and geography.  We have been studying regions of Africa so the children were happy to look at the map and identify where Nigeria, Cameroon, Togo, Mali  (etc) are   after watching the cartoon!

Hope you enjoy this  episode of Bino and Fino as they learn all about Nigerian Independence Day . I encourage you to order a DVD for the children in your life!   What other things are you doing to bring Sankofa to youth of your life?

Adinkra symbol Sankofa - Return & Get what you left behind

October is Black History Month in the United Kingdom!   I just learned last year that our UK Brothers and Sisters do not celebrate their season of Sankofa during the same month as we do here in the United States.   This news is VERY exciting to me because I have “discovered” another area to research in Black History ( as if I don’t have a WIDE field here in the US!)

Learning about Black History UK has been such a beautiful discovory……many facts I did not know about. (be sure to follow our twitter timeline for more @kiarablu)  The video I have included below is a wonderful interview with Mia Morris.  She is the founder of Black-History-Month.co.uk – a web site devoted to Black History in the United Kingdom.   This fantastic site is a treasure trove of historical information from past and modern times.   Be sure to hop over for a visit.

If you are celebrating the month of October as Black History month PLEASE leave us a note about your event, family time, teaching or artistic expressions.   Links are VERY welcome so that I can learn MORE!!

Adinkra symbol - By God's grace all will be well

ONYANKOPON ADOM NTI BIRIBIARA BEYE YIE

This is the Adinkra symbol that represents hope providence and faith.

I came across this beautiful video for the song “Somewhere in Heaven”  by the Master Musician SANTANA which I think could be looked at as a  musical interpretation of the symbol.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

The United States  has  elected a President of African descent —-

There are no longer laws  that confine or restrict the places  where African-Americans can go……

so many people ask the question……”Why do we need Black History Month”?

Represents strength

Adinkra symbol Wawa Aba

I believe we MUST continue to remember, celebrate and pass on the legacy of resilience that Africans  in American have lived.   Understanding the difficult past of our African ancestors and how they stood strong, believed in God for their freedom and never gave up is extremely important as we look to the future.   Our children need to understand that they are free because their ancestors NEVER gave up or gave in. Despite the evidence of any chance that things would change …….they continued on with the belief that if not their children, then their children’s children or great-grandchildren WOULD BE FREE!   And here we are …….their beliefs realized…..how beautiful!!!

The Adinkra symbol WAWA ABA  means seed of a wawa tree and represents hardiness, toughness and perseverance.   Black history month is a salute to our ancestors who kept these principles in their heart and minds.   We have to continue the walk ….standing just as tall and strong!   Celebrate Black history month this year with a vision of Wawa
